This eighth booklet in the series examines the closes of Dunbar High Street during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in many cases explains how they acquired their names. While not all closes are marked by signage, both official names and local commonplace names are recorded here.
Building on research begun in Booklet No. 2 — An Ancient Burgh, which listed business addresses between 1837 and 2011, this study expands the scope to include all known closes, named or unnamed. The result is the most comprehensive account of Dunbar’s High Street closes published to date.
