Wingate Pasha
The first full biography of Sir Reginald Wingate, an eminent Scottish soldier-statesman who shaped the history of Sudan and Egypt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Rising from poverty with little formal education, Wingate mastered Arabic and became one of Britain’s most influential figures in the region. He helped Kitchener reclaim Sudan from Dervish rule, governed with enlightened reforms, and played a leading role in the Arab Revolt during the First World War — though it was his subordinate, T. E. Lawrence, who gained the fame.
Later, as High Commissioner of Egypt, Wingate represented Egyptian interests at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference before retiring to Dunbar, where he remained active until his death in 1953.
Wingate Pasha is both a meticulous biography and an engaging portrait of a remarkable Scot whose legacy deserves renewed attention.
