Penny for the Gas
Penny for the Gas encapsulates the memories of the author, Roy Pugh, growing up in Dunbar, East Lothian, in the 1940s and 50s. Readers whose formative years occurred in the same era will recognise much of what is included here, a remarkably different and more locally polarised existence than that which prevails today. It is amazing how much things have changed in the passage of a mere half-century.
It is a story of many moods, sometimes nostalgic, sentimental and romantic; at other times humorous, irreverent and occasionally downright rude. There are snippets of what today would be seen as non-pc but, the object was to portray things as they were, not to come up with a sanitised version. Remember, these are reflections of what was happening in a world as observed and experienced by a young and developing mind. We all know how complex and occasionally traumatic that process can be!
